“Australian Comic Arts Festival – (“ACAF”) and is scheduled for Sat, June 4th, 2011.
The “Australian Comic Arts Festival – (“ACAF”) event is for all forms of comics -
webcomics, print strips, political cartoons, manga, comic books, motion comics, graphic novels, comic writers and anything else I may have missed.
ACAF will be a place where the general public can experience the best of Australian creative comic arts-past & present.
The main focus of ACAF is to be an ongoing event that is there to support & teach those interested in comics. The event is to allow current creators to network & exhibit, as well as to inspire people who have an interest in creating to get involved and learn some skills.
ACAF has the support of the Australian Cartoonists Association, as well as the State Library of QLD.
The event will be happening in Brisbane, at “The Edge” (the new digital culture centre part of the State Library of Queensland - http://theedge.slq.qld.gov.au )
This idea for this event was inspired by the Toronto Comic Arts Festival ( http://torontocomics.com/)
The Australian Comic Arts Festival (“ACAF”) is something that I hope will grow to be as popular as Toronto Comic Arts Festival (“TCAF”).
The primary driver of the event is to promote the diversity of comics as a legitimate artistic and literary medium.
ACAF will seek to promote comic creators of all mediums and work towards the betterment of the medium of comics in Australia and to extend the audience for them as much as possible.
ACAF will be run as a Not-For-Profit event and will focus on the comic creators and their art, removing the other popular culture as aspects that are already so well showcased by existing comic conventions.
ACAF aims to do something that deals more specifically with the art form of comics itself, with an emphasis on genre appreciation and open interaction between creators and working to better strengthen the Australian Comics community.
While many of the final details of ACAF are still to be finalised, I can tell you the following items are planned:
- Large exhibition area featuring publishers, comic authors and artists
- Gallery show
- Tutorials / workshops
- Presentations
- Guest speakers
The really great stuff that you need to know:
- Exhibitors tables will be free.
Yep, that is not a typo. (As this will be a not-for-profit event, I hope that exhibitor spots can remain free for as many years as possible, in the future too.)
If you are a comic creator or publisher, please let me know if you would be interested in exhibiting.
I will be releasing an exhibitor booking form soon, but in the meantime email me if you are interested & I will keep your details on file. (email to: comicfestival@gmail.com)
- Australian Presenters:
These spots are currently unfilled. If you have interest in taking part in this capacity, please let me know. (email to: comicfestival@gmail.com)
- Planned webcasts:
If you cannot attend this event, there will be webcasts of the free presentations available to view afterward.

Australian created comics and creators can, and should, be as popular and well known those created overseas.
One day, we will be and I hope this event will be my very small part of helping to make this happen.
